A late Victorian terrace with a two metre kitchen and a scullery bolted on the back. Both come off, the side return is absorbed, and one wide stock brick room now runs the full width of the plot to the garden.

An Edwardian semi with a metre of dead ground down the side. Filling it widens the plan where it was meanest, without losing garden. The old flank wall stays exposed, and light drops in along the boundary.

A 1930s house with a poor addition on the back. It comes off and is replaced by one low garden room in pale brick, glazed the full width, so the original house is left to be itself.

Victorian terraces one room wide, with a side return holding nothing but bins. Edwardian semis where the back of the house is darker than the front. Long plots north of the London Road, and rear additions built cheaply in the eighties that now decide how the whole ground floor works. Most of the space is already there. It is usually in the wrong shape.
ALTER is a small residential architecture studio in Leigh on Sea. We design extensions, renovations and new homes, and we work with a practical understanding of how houses are actually altered and built — drainage, party walls, brick, budget and the order things happen in.
Tell us about the house and what is not working. A sentence or two is enough.
